There is a pair of 2001 Air Jordan 3 True Blues that I wore to American Le Mans and then never really wore again. Sears Point, 2001. The sky opened up and the mud got so deep that our car sat stuck in the parking lot long after the checkered flag. The shoes did not survive it. I have written about those before, and I will again, because they earned it.

That is the part nobody can manufacture. You cannot design a grail. You live one.

A grail is not a colorway, or a price, or a number of pairs made. It is a story you ended up carrying without meaning to. The day soaks into the shoe and after that you cannot pull the two apart. Your experience is what makes the object matter. Not the marketing around it. Not the resale. You.

Here is another one for me. Before there was social media, before anybody had a word for any of this, I was lining up outside NikeTown in San Francisco for releases. I was posting shoe photos on Myspace and people thought I was strange for it. That was the whole scene. A handful of us who could not explain why a pair of shoes felt worth standing in the cold for.

So when Nike built an Air Max 90 to celebrate ten years of NikeTown San Francisco in 2007, it was never a question. That store was part of my actual life. The shoe was a grail before I ever saw a photo of it, because the story was already mine. They still turn up out there if you know where to look.

That is what Pursuit is about. The chase. The hunt for the objects that hold a story, yours or someone else’s, and refuse to let it go.

The Vault is my way of opening the archive. The things other people call grails, the ones that felt impossible to find, I want them to be able to change hands. Someone acquires the object and a new chapter starts on top of the old one. The shoe keeps remembering. It just remembers for someone new.
