The Friday before Car Week has a feeling you only understand once you have lived it. The transporters are unloading. The hotels are filling. The whole peninsula is holding its breath before ten days of noise, and for one night none of it has started yet.
That is the Kickoff. The calm before the storm. Ask a local what to actually go to during Car Week and this one sits near the top of the list, even though it almost never makes the glossy guides.
I have been a handful of times now and it never gets old. There is something about watching the cars roll in before the crowds do, when the whole thing still feels like a neighborhood instead of an event. I have made a couple of videos about it over the years.
