Monterey Mornings: Cars & Coffee

Monterey Mornings: Cars & Coffee

It’s 7am at a gas station on Highway 68 and there’s a car here worth more than my house, taking on fuel like it’s a Tuesday commute. The owner is in a fleece, holding a coffee, half awake, standing next to something that idles like it’s clearing its throat. Nobody is performing. That’s exactly why it’s the best hour of the week.

Everybody films the lawns and the auctions. The mornings are the part they miss, and the mornings are where Car Week actually lives.

Before any of it opens, the cars that are going to be driven that day come out to wake up. The Highway 68 stations between Laguna Seca and Pebble are the spot, roughly 7 to 8:30. Race cars, hypercars, the occasional thing you can’t immediately name, all lined up for gas next to minivans and work trucks. There’s no rope. You can stand three feet from a car that will be behind glass by noon, and the guy pumping its fuel will talk to you about it because it’s early and the crowds haven’t shown up to ruin it yet.

If you want it even calmer than that, the Carmel side streets around 7:30 are dead quiet with the light coming up gold through the fog. Some of the cars from the night before are still parked exactly where their owners left them off Ocean Avenue, and you get them to yourself for an hour before the town wakes up. Lighthouse Ave in Pacific Grove starts moving Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning, casual lot stuff, coffee runs, the raw builds that people actually drive instead of trailer.

Do the coffee properly while you’re out there. Captain & Stoker in Monterey knows what it’s doing. Alta Bakery is where you go when your hands are cold and you need to sit down for ten minutes and defrost. Lucy’s on Lighthouse if you want to eat something quick and get back to it.

You don’t need a plan for the mornings. That’s the whole appeal. You need to be up before it’s comfortable, okay with cold hands, and willing to wander. The cars find you. Somebody’s always warming something up around the next corner, and you just follow the sound.

The catch is that the best of it is over by 9. Once the marine layer burns off and the lots open, the crowds arrive and the magic thins out. So the trade is real. Set an alarm you’ll hate, or sleep in and miss the actual good part.

I set the alarm. Every day. See you at the pump.
